5 Things To Do Before You Go On Vacation
Summer is almost here, and for a lot of us that means vacation season. Whether you are going on a week long international cruise or just going out of town for a few days, there are some important precautions we at Parkway Village advise you to take before your for your vacation.
1.) Make arrangements for your pet – The first thing that you should do is to arrange for your pet. If you can take your pet on vacation with you, than you are in luck. For those of you less fortunate, make sure to plan in advance for a friend or family member to take care of them, or make an appointment at a local boarding facility. Groomer’s often times offer boarding options.
2.) Change the thermostat – Even if you are going away just for a couple days, this is a great tip that will help you save both money and energy. You can either shut your thermostat off if the weather is going to be nice, or set it so that the temperature in the apartment is around 80-85 degrees. There is no need to keep your apartment really cool if you are not going to be there. Doing so will help keep your utility bill balanced.
3.) Unplug all electronics – If not in use, or even turned off, appliances still use energy if they are plugged in. Unplugging appliances before you leave can also help save you money and balance out your use of energy. Unplug things like the computer, alarm clock, microwave, toaster, and any other appliances you may have around your apartment. There is no need to pay for these things to eat up energy if you are not using them.
- a. *Another tip: If you don’t use an appliance regularly, keep it unplugged until you want to use it.
4.) Have a friend or neighbor check on your apartment while you are away Don’t forget things like plants that will need to be watered while you are away. Not to mention, having someone come and go at least once a day will help it look as if someone is home, and will help keep intruders away. If you cannot find someone to check in on your apartment while you are away, you can invest in some timers that will turn lights on and off at certain times. This will also help give off the image that someone is inside the apartment. These timers are cheap and can be found at most home improvement stores.
5.) Clean- The last important step to take is to make sure that you clean your place before you take off. It is so much better to come home to a clean apartment, so make sure you wash and put away the dishes, take care of your laundry, and vacuum thoroughly. Also, clean the surfaces and floors of tile, especially in the kitchen, to make sure no leftover food or spills get overlooked, attracting ants and mold. Lastly, be sure to take the garbage out. If you don’t, leftover food can spoil and rot, leaving you with a pleasant aroma when you come back.
